An executive coach is a consultant who works with senior management people to help them develop and enhance the skills necessary for those high-level jobs. Since there are not very many executives to coach there are even fewer positions available coaching them. These positions tend to go to people who come from executive backgrounds themselves or to people who have strong academic backgrounds, with a history of publishing on executive issues.

Executive Coach Description

Executives are often promoted from positions where they performed to an exceptional level but did not necessarily learn the skills necessary for upper-level management. For example, a successful salesman would be promoted to sales manager and eventually to an executive level; he will have developed sales skills, then developed the skills necessary to manage salespeople, but will not necessarily have developed the skills needed to manage an entire division of a company. An executive coach will work with him on a one-on-one basis in order to develop these necessary skills, such as how to influence other executives and how to make long-term, big-picture plans that are practical and add value to the company.
