Looking for a job as a teenager can seem daunting, but it doesn’t need to be. Follow these simple tips and you should have no problems finding a part-time job.

Writing Your Resume

  • Keep it short – There is no need for your resume to be more than one page until you are finished school and looking for a full-time career (even then, it is not always necessary). Employers are in a hurry and don’t have time to read any unnecessary information, so keep it brief.
  • Include only relevant information – Only include information about yourself that shows why you’d be a good fit for the job, such as your level of education, any previous volunteer or work experience (even babysitting or lawnmowing), and awards you’ve received. Employers don’t need to know that you like manga comics or playing basketball (unless, of course, that’s directly associated with the job for which you are applying), and will have plenty of time to learn these things about you once you’ve been hired.
  • Be creative – While templates are a great place to start if you are unsure how to go about writing a resume, they do not allow you to stand out from the crowd. If at all possible, try finding books at your local library that show examples of good resumes.
  • Cover letters – these show the employer that you are serious about finding a job, as few teens write them, but be careful that they do not simply repeat the information on your resume. As a teenage job seeker, though, a cover letter is not necessary, so don’t go crazy trying to write one if you’re having problems.

Distributing your Resumes

  • Dress well – Do not go into a store to hand in a resume wearing jeans, chains, or baggy or tattered clothes. If you look good you will be more confident, and this will in turn help you secure an interview.
  • Be professional – Many employers will not even bother looking at your resume if you go in chewing gum or wearing headphones. Also, if you have family or friends walk into the store with you, the employer will assume that you cannot do things on your own and will take this to mean that you will not show initiative or work independently on the job either.
  • Good first impression – When you enter the business, ask to speak to the manager, shake their hand, and introduce yourself. This will certainly impress the manager.

At the Interview

  • Dress Well – Again, everyday casual clothing is not acceptable interview attire. A good general rule to follow is to dress as you would for the best day on the job.
  • Be professional – Again, no gum chewing, no friends sitting outside waiting for you (especially if they are being disruptive at all).
  • Be courteous - Try to arrive at least ten minutes early for your interview, and be sure not to be late at all – the employer will not appreciate you wasting their time. When the interview is over, remember to shake the interviewer’s hand and thank them for their time.

Post-Interview

  • Show appreciation – While it is not necessary, especially for teen job seekers, an employer will be impressed if you call them the day after the interview to thank them again for their time. Keep in mind, you should not try to sell yourself to them or remind them how much you need a job so that you can buy that iPod you want – this call should only be a quick call to thank them for meeting with you, and to say that you hope to hear from them once they’ve made a decision. So few people do this that it might just give you the push you need to secure the position, and even if they’ve already hired someone else, they will likely think of you next time a position opens up.

If your resume is well-written, and you follow these tips, finding a part-time job should be a breeze compared to math class.
