Computer systems software engineers construct, install, and maintain software required to run computer systems. They often work within large organizations wherein they analyze the computer needs of each department and design software around those needs. Generally, they are responsible for developing software that will ease processes for coordination between departments and streamline workflows.

Other tasks included in the software engineer job description include setting up an organization's network system, testing software that they develop, and training workers to use such customized computer systems. They are also responsible for designing and implementing system security and data assurance protocols.
