On 1st November 2010, I had the opportunity to visit ADIPEC 2010 (Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference) in Abu Dhabi, UAE, at the invitation of an oil and gas industry recruiter, World Wide Worker.com of Tabernacle Court, London. Noel Armstrong, Head of Events, introduced me to a Malaysian exploration company and led me to Frank de Winter, the UAE General Manager of WTS Energy, a worldwide technical services recruiter. With 1,500 exhibitor companies from 50 countries, the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre was packed with an impressive array of Who's Who in the oil and gas industry. Gas

Natural gas, which is now said to be abundant and to have only half the carbon emission of coal, has emerged as a credible competitor to clean renewable energy sources. The challenge is in achieving leak-free gas wells to prevent pollution to ground water sources and agricultural fields. On page 28 of the hefty ADIPEC Daily News Day 1 newsletter (printed in English and Arabic), Mr. Ghasser El-Badrashini, Halliburton Vice President, Middle East and North Africa, was said to have made the following observations regarding the future prospects of the oil and gas industry:

• He anticipated accelerating demand for energy and a sharper focus on unconventional gas reserves.
• He quoted estimates that by 2030 global demand for energy will be double 1990 levels.
• He quoted projections of a 55% rise in population, a 150% rise in the number of passenger vehicles on the road and a doubling of the number of commercial jets in service.
• He concluded that, as conventional sources run out, “...Natural gas, led by the vast reserves of shale gas located all over the world, has the potential to extend the hydrocarbon era for several decades and provide a bridge to whatever energy forms prove economical after that.”
