For the most part, newsrooms do not function democratically. There is usually one person, the managing editor, making all the calls. Reporters are expected to do what they're told and to do it quickly and efficiently.
Why is there a need for hierarchy in the newsroom? In the stress and pressure of deadline, there must be clear chain of command. Journalism is a murky area where opinions are sometimes heated and contested. Journalists all have opinions, but someone must have the final say and it must have value.
