Located on West Seventh and Michigan streets in Downtown St. Paul, the Glockenspiel is a beacon of Southern German hospitality that calls many in to experience it. The décor is authentic and quaint, with trinkets and artwork from Germany and Austria.
Unique Traditions
The Glockenspiel does offer a Stammtisch, a table for regulars to sit and casually practice their German and tell stories. The mural above the Stammtisch reads, “Fuer Jäger, Fischer und andere Luegner,” which translates into, “For hunters, fishers, and other liars.” The Stammtisch is regularly booked, but the Glockenspiel keeps an extra Stammtisch sign, if another is needed.
The Glockenspiel also offers “Das Boot,” the boot of beer that was made famous by Oktoberfest, and the subsequent movie Beerfest. There is no deposit on the boot, but there is a fee if it is broken. There are a lot of rules to “Das Boot” which one can find when they venture in to the establishment. It should be noted that “Das Boot” must be ordered with authority, and with a hand slamming on the bar for the staff to take the request seriously.
